How To Create a Warm and Inviting Kitchen

While some may be fans of the stark white kitchen, I prefer to create a warm and inviting kitchen space. Our home is an open floor plan. You see our kitchen immediately when you walk into the living area, and I wanted mine to reflect my love for earthy neutrals and organic decor. Here are some tips for creating a warm and inviting kitchen you want to cook in. Oh, and BTW – our wall color is White Dove, and our cabinet color is Pashmina, both by Benjamin Moore!

Earth Toned Elements

Adding organic elements can be as simple as adding open wood shelving or wood-based decor on your counters and island. Use a warm-toned greige for your wall paint, and if you’re feeling extremely creative, a jewel-toned green can be stunning. But, of course, a warm-toned white will do the trick if you prefer a more neutral look and feel.

Wood is the easiest way to incorporate a warm and cozy feel into any space. Wood immediately creates an organic vibe, whether it’s decorative accents, furniture pieces, or wood planking on the walls or ceiling. We used rift-cut white oak sealed with a matte ‘provincial’ stain everywhere in the house.

Decorative Accents

Not many people add art to their kitchen, but it’s one of the most underrated ways to add warmth to a space. Vintage-inspired framed paintings provide a sense of nostalgia and personal touch to your kitchen. It’s a great way to have your decor style flow through all the rooms in your home, which should include your kitchen! Small decorative accents are the best way to create a warm and inviting kitchen. From artwork to decorative bows and jars, I’ll link some of my favorite kitchen additions below!

Secondly, I love using large vases with branches or flowers. Not only does this allow me to make seasonal decor changes easily, but it also brings so much charm into any room! Adding greenery to an open countertop space instantly brings life to it. As you can see in my photos, there are sprinkles of plants and stems just about everywhere.

Make your Kitchen Accessible

One of my favorite elements of my kitchen is the countertop cabinets! It’s the best place to store kitchen appliances like toasters, a KitchenAid mixer, and items you use every day like coffee pods! It keeps countertops clutter-free, so you can add decor pieces instead! The key to a comfortable kitchen is convenience and accessibility, and countertop cabinets do just that!

I also love using glass canisters to hold a lot of things. Firstly, they’re much more aesthetically pleasing than that blue pasta box in your pantry, and they’re actually much easier to grab and use. You can even keep some of them out on the counter if it’s something you use daily, like ground coffee!

Keep It or Change It – Floor Plan

While we were in the beginning phases of our new build home, I relied a lot on Pinterest and Instagram for tips and ideas. There were a few accounts on Instagram that I followed religiously for their amazing series called “Keep it, Change it”. They went through their homes and talked about each thing they loved and each thing they would change. Each week I would look forward to learning something new about what others would do differently, the second time around. That’s where this series stems from!

Each week I will focus on a part of the build or a room of the house. So far, it’s six weeks long, but who knows if it will continue on as you guys let me know what you want to learn about! I am not a professional and mostly will be talking about my build and what I would do differently or what I love. Hopefully, it inspires you, as it did me.

I asked YOU on Instagram what you wanted to see first, Exteriors or Floor Plan and an astonishingly almost 80% said floor plan!

SO HERE WE GO! Week 1 – Floor Plan

When we started the build process, we wanted to downsize. We began with looking at 1800-2000 sq ft homes. We wanted 3 bedroom, 2 bathrooms, single level, no extra areas and no wasted (for us) space. After meeting with our builder, we had decide on a floor plan that was just under 2,000 sq ft. We do have a full, unfinished tank basement! (So Ben hates it when I say we downsized LOL)

Here is a full house tour over on my IGTV.

What I would do again:

We bumped out the whole “garage side” of the house 2 more feet. This gave us more room in the gargage for Ben’s truck, and 2 more feet in our bedroom. This put our total sq ft to 2300.

We vaulted our ceilings in the main area to 16ft. I really feel this opens the smaller space up!

I would absolutely keep the door from the laundry room to the owners suite closet! This has been wonderful to have easy access. The floor plan makes a circle around from the laundry room, closet, owners suite back to the garage entry.

Not the final layout but close!

What I would change:

Our spare bedrooms and guest bathroom are smaller than we would like now that we have been here for a few months. We did think of this while planning the build, in the end deciding it was best for US to keep them this size (12X11).

We would have had the attic area built out where you can add a bonus room above the garage. Just for some extra space when we sell.

Some tips I have learned along the way.

Consider how your home is situated on its lot, particularly the orientation and view – and maximize the assets. We positioned our home a little “off” to get max views from the living room, bedroom and front door/dining room. We spent the time staking out the house before long before dig day. I can still picture us standing in “our back porch” watching the sunset. This really helped us get a feel for the home views, before we built.

Plan traffic flow to increase convenience from room to room. We sat with our floor plan and imagined walking around each room and how it would flow. I even had my builder put in a couch on her program for size reference in the living room.

Consider your budget. One thing we have heard over and over is that it is less expensive to build a home with the least amounts of cut outs, bump outs and special layouts. As in, if you were to see our home from above, it’s very straight and square. This is not for everyone, just to keep in mind budgets. I am sure your builder can explain it much better than I can.

Look for visual connection from space to space. I was able to keep the whole home cohesive because I had this in mind for every room.

A closet near the entry is a great convenience, but it was not necessary for us. We have a bench and a coat rack if needed for guests. We enter in another door of the house, so it wasn’t needed.

The path from the garage and/or laundry room to the kitchen should be short and direct, especially for unloading groceries. We added a whole door from the garage straight to the pantry for this reason! I will cover this in upcoming weeks.

Questions YOU had on Instagram!

What does your Laundry Room/Mud Room Combo look like?

This is a whole room I would change. I hadn’t thought it out enough past, I wanted a sink and a mudroom bench. I wanted all the cleaning supplies and towels etc in there. But also, it had to be the coat closet. AGH!

How expensive is it to tweak a floor plan?

Each build is different. As is each builder! I believe it all depends on if you buy the plan from the builder or from an architect/website. Our home was custom from ideas we had seen around. Our builder created the floor plan and we changed it as needed, BEFORE dig day. You might need to pay for changes if you have to have them re done by the architect.

That’s it! Chatting about a floor plan was harder than I thought! If you have any questions, drop them below and I will do my best to answer. Thank you all for being here and being so supportive.

Our Build This Week – Episode 1 & 2

Hey guys! Well week two is all finished up and it can be summed up in one word. Rain! We had made a ton of progress from day one to seven and after that the rain stalled us.

Day 15 they prepped the basement for concrete floors. When we showed these pictures to Bens dad he noticed what a clean, good job the crew is doing. That always makes you feel good about your choice of builder when dad approves.

Below the bay window, in the notch out in the middle of the photo, is where the basement bathroom will be. We won’t be finishing off the basement, but I do believe we are going to go ahead and have the bathroom put in now to save money down the road.

Day 16 the sun started to shine and they poured the basement floors!

Our builder texted us that morning to let us know the big pump truck would be there so we could watch. It was really neat to watch the crew work the concrete. I’ll link our YouTube for you to see video from above the crew working the concrete.

The finished product! We have floors. The builder said it would be able to be walked on in a few hours and fully cured in a few days (I could be wrong on the timing).

Then it rained for two more days after this. HAHA As I write this, its Day 19. It’s been beautiful today, we are excited to head over to the house after work to see what they were able to get done in the mud LOL. I am going to try to start weekly recap updates here on the blog every Sunday.

Day One! Dig Day.

Straight giddy. The perfect way to describe what I was feeling as I drove up and watched the excavators push around our dirt. Also felt a little creepy, rolling down the window and getting my giant phone out to record them 🤣 My building group of girlfriends say that feeling will pass as time goes on and I’ll get used to going out there when they are working. I want to be able to bring goodies and snacks to them as time passes and I figure out what’s what. Does anyone who has built, have any ideas or examples of what they’ve done for their crew?! ie: donuts, box of snacks left at house when it’s framed, etc.

Update on status:

Last week we picked out the siding material & color, exterior stone, talked shingles, soffits, gutters, cedar posts, gables, trim and garage doors. Nailed down the front door, windows and the changes to the master bathroom layout I made last minute.

The master bathroom…. Something just felt wrong about the layout we picked. I couldn’t put words to what it was, just didn’t mesh well with me, so after confirming with the builder it wasn’t too late to change, I drew up another layout.

Building a custom house brings a million decisions to the table. This week I learned, if you feel something is off or have a vision a certain way, speak up!

After talks with my husband, my BFF and a lovely new insta friend Tiffany @gowlerhomes , I decided to take the risk and create a decent sized wet room on one end. Can’t wait to show that off when the time comes.

Modern Farmhouse, Modern Craftsman and Traditional style can all start to blend together. What I love most about building homes right now is that it’s a going trend to design it how YOU love it. All these styles will be represented in our new home.
