Denim Alternatives to Skinny Jeans: A Guide for Women Over 30

For years, skinny jeans have reigned supreme in the closets of countless women, offering a versatile and effortless option for dressing up or down. However, as you navigate your 30s, it may be the perfect time to explore fresh denim alternatives. Admittedly, I often felt somewhat restricted in my skinny jeans, so I was thrilled when the trend shifted towards a more relaxed leg a few years back. Yet, I was uncertain how to style these new silhouettes or select the proper footwear.

In this blog post, I’ll introduce several styles worth considering as denim alternatives to your trusty skinny jeans. Keep an eye out for a follow-up post where we’ll delve into pairing these jeans with the perfect tops and shoes for a polished look!

1. Straight Leg Jeans

Cropped straight-leg jeans have been gaining popularity over the last few years, and for good reason. They are a modern take on the classic straight-leg jean with a slightly cropped hemline that hits just above the ankle. They are perfect to wear with everything from sneakers to heels, making them a great denim alternative to skinnies.

2. High-Waisted Flared Jeans

High-waisted flared jeans might seem like a throwback to the 70s, but they have resurfaced as a trendy option. They work exceptionally well for women with curvier bodies, accentuating the waist and hips while creating a long and lean look. Below are a few of my favorites!

Levi’s Women’s High Rise Flare Jeans

What I love most about these jeans is there are no holes, rips, or distressing! The light denim keeps the structure playful. Also, Levi’s is a brand that’s been around for decades and is known for producing quality denim. Their high-rise flare jeans are perfect for women in their 30s and beyond. They offer a flattering fit with a high-rise waist and a subtle flare that elongates the legs.

3. Relaxed Leg Jeans

Relaxed-leg jeans are a great alternative to skinny jeans because they offer a similar level of comfort and versatility. The difference is that relaxed-leg jeans are less form-fitting, allowing for a more laid-back and understated look. And lastly, they work well with casual tops and accessories, creating a relaxed and stylish vibe. A slightly looser fit than this would be wide-leg jeans.

4. Bootcut Jeans

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve worn cowboy boots. Bootcut jeans were a staple in my wardrobe. These jeans still have a slight flare from the knee to the hem, creating a subtle balance between the hips and the lower leg. Because of this, bootcut jeans are known for their leg-lengthening effect, making them a great denim alternative to skinnies!

5. Boyfriend Jeans

Boyfriend jeans, dad jeans, mom jeans.. these all typically mean the same thing. They’re known for their relaxed, slouchy fit; boyfriend jeans are designed to look like they’ve been borrowed from your significant other or a parental figure, haha. They typically have a low to mid-rise waist and can be worn cuffed or uncuffed at the ankle for a casual, laid-back vibe. These would look incredible with a bodysuit or something slightly tighter up top! I absolutely adore these as skinny denim alternatives! Shop these jeans here!

Denim Tips

As we age, our style evolves, and we begin to look for pieces that suit our changing preferences and priorities. While skinny jeans are comfortable and convenient, they might not fit the bill for every occasion or every personal preference. This is why having a versatile range of denim styles in your wardrobe is essential.

There are a few things to remember when buying jeans that will save you a migraine or two!

  1. Sizes are always different. It doesn’t matter sometimes if you’re shopping within the same brand. The sizing between two different styles can be completely different! A great tip is to try on jeans and write down the sizing and style within each brand that you love! Then you can go home and scope out different prices!
  2. Wash your jeans inside out! This is especially important for black jeans! We don’t want them turning gray, so be sure always to wash all jeans inside out! If you don’t want them to shrink, wash them in cold water!
  3. Steam them! If you’re trying to elevate the look of denim, steam your jeans quickly prior to wearing them! They’ll look 100 times better!
